Written 2012 01 09

I bought this 26" Yardman Snowblower during the Winter of 2006. I use it to clear my driveway that receives on average 27 feet of snow per year in the mountains of Colorado.

First a comment about the price. At the time of my writing this review, the price for this item on Amazon is 50% higher than what I paid on Amazon 6 years ago. That's too much of an increase.

This snowblower is a beast. It always starts easily with one pull of the cord. The Tecumseh motor is loud (ratta tatta!!), vibrates the entire machine, and is strong. I've never had the feeling that this machine needed more power.

Its not a Honda. Its a beast. Its a low tech solution that does the job.

The good is that it continues to work for me in my high volume snow environment. I like the joystick controlled snow chute that allows changes in direction while in operation. Much better than having to stop to change chute direction using turn cranks etc. Replacement parts are readily available on the MTD parts website but I wouldn't exactly call them cheap. I've replaced normal wear parts such as skid plates etc. and had to replace a poorly designed spring clip part on one of the handles.

Another "good" for me is the 26" width. The 24" machines seem a little too narrow for me and the bigger units are too bulky to fit in my garage.

The bad. Probably the biggest "bad" is that the drive mechanism that drives the wheels and propels the unit has some problems. At start-up it works fine but after a few passes it starts to slip causing me to have to push the unit to keep it moving. After several more passes of intermittent drive slippage it eventually sorts itself out and the propulsion system works fine for the rest of my driveway. This happens every time I use the unit and it has done this since new. I've adjusted all the controls properly and I open up and clean the drive mechanisms every year. I've never been able to solve the problem.

Other bad? The right hand lever that controls propulsion is starting to stick, meaning that if you let go of the unit and the lever sticks, the machine will continue driving forward.

From time-to-time the engine has difficulty with fuel flow. It occasionally stalls even when the tank is more than half full. When this happens, simply priming the fuel and pull starting allows it to fire up again.

I'd buy one of these utilitarian beasts again but it has to be cheap compared to more refined alternatives. I'm hoping to keep my 6 year-old unit up and running for many more years.
