The YST-FSW050 is an ideal match for surround-sound sound bar systems (like Yamaha's Digital Sound Projector Series) and micro component systems--any place you need a big punch from a smaller package. Advanced YST II and Down-Firing Active Subwoofer Advanced YST II produces rich bass sound, and the Linear Portreduces cabinet noise for clarity even at high volumes Rack-Mountable Design Matches Speakerbar Systems and Micro Component Systems The typical subwoofer box is not a good aesthetic match for a slim front surround system such as a Yamaha Digital Sound Projector. So Yamaha created a new design for the YST-FSW050. Much slimmer than normal subwoofers, it will fit neatly in a rack below the surround system like Yamaha's Digital Sound Projector series, and matches well with micro component systems such as Yamaha's PianoCraft series. Of course, the compact, rack mountable design saves space as well. Down-Firing Active Design This subwoofer employs a high performance, down-firing active design. Even though compact, it delivers impressive bass power and accurate sound reproduction. The down-firing design radiates the sound efficiently in all directions. Linear Port The Linear Port provides smooth bass response and minimizes extraneous cabinet noise to eliminate the "box buzz" common to smaller subwoofers. It also serves to boost the sound output from this compact subwoofer, so you can fill any room with tight, punchy bass. Dynamic Power Capable of handling high dynamic power, the YST-FSW050 subwoofer ensures that you hear all bass sounds, even the loudest short bursts, with fast attack and total clarity. Advanced YST II can dynamically adjust to your amplifier signalto create smooth bass with fast attack Advanced YST II Brings You Super Bass The effectiveness of Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) is based upon two principles: the Helmholtz Resonator and negative-impedance drive. How does it work? Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) uses an Active Servo Processing amplifier circuit to achieve zero impedance so the speaker unit has a more linear motion, resulting in tighter bass reproduction and minimizing distortion because everything in the subwoofer moves together smoothly. In Advanced YST II, an Advanced Negative Impedance Converter enables the speaker cone to be driven with even tighter control--it can dynamically adjust in order to select the optimum values for speaker impedance variation. The result is more stable and accurate low range response, as well as higher sound pressure levels, for more natural and energetic bass reproduction. Technical Specifications

This review is from: Yamaha YST-FSW050BL2 Subwoofer (Each, Black) (Electronics)
I bought this for use with my YSP-4100 sound projector. I was very happy with my sound projector before, but now with the sub I'm ecstatic. I only began thinking about a sub after reading reviews of what a difference it makes to the sound experience. I chose this sub because of the good reviews and for the form/fit in my rear shelves. This unit exceeds my expectations and I would recommend it highly. I was going to give it 4 stars since there is no auto on/off and because there's no remote to adjust the volume, but I decided not to penalize the product just because I have to get off my lazy boy a time or two.
