DEWALT D55141FNBN 16-Gauge Finish Nailer/18-Gauge Brad Nailer

Product Description

        Product Description

With a heavy-duty 16-gauge finish nailer, an 18-gauge brad nailer, an oil-free compressor, and all the fittings you need to get set-up, this kit from DeWalt makes it easy tackle a wide range of finish carpentry and woodworking tasks, from crafting custom furniture to securing molding in place. The 18-gauge nailer can handle up to 100 straight collated nails that are 1/2-inch to 1-1/4 inches long at a time, while the 16-gauge nailer can handle up to 160 straight collated nails that are 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches long at a time. Each of these nailers also offers tool-free jam clearing, so a bent or damaged fastener never brings work to a standstill for long, convenient 360-degree exhaust, a unique vertical slide that allows you to select depth settings quickly and without any special tools, an over-molded no-mar pad that grips material for accurate toe nailing and protects your work surface, and a trigger lock for improved safety. Each well-balanced nailer also employs a reversible belt hook that provides convenience for both right- and left-handed users.
Featuring a two-gallon tank and the ability to deliver 2.0 SCFM at 90 PSI and a maximum of 150 PSI, the compressor included in this kit is powerful enough to run both of these nailers at the same time, with dual quick couplers to make set up easy. And at just 79dBA, it is surprisingly quiet. You can count on its durability with details like an oil-free, long-life pump, which ensures smooth, maintenance-free operation that never results in oil spilled on sensitive work surfaces, a high-flow regulator, an easy-to-use ball valve drain, and a thoughtful roll-cage design that prevents damage to critical compressor parts. At just 30 pounds and 10.5 inches wide with a convenient cord-wrap feature, this compact unit is easy to move around the jobsite and to store.
This review is from: DEWALT D55141FNBN 16-Gauge Finish Nailer/18-Gauge Brad Nailer/Compressor Combo Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I went to my local big box store to replace my 20 year old DuoFast finish nailer. The DuoFast shot at least a million nails and probably shot two million. It never jammed.

I set out to buy the Hitachi nailer because my brother in law is a cabinet maker and I frequently used his while doing work in his shop. I liked the Hitachi nailer. Then I saw the DeWalt. There it was- the DeWalt kit with a hose, compressor, finish nailer and brad nailer and storage bag for $279 on sale which was about $10 less than just the finish nailer and the brad nailer would have been in Hitachi. That's how I picked it out; it was an impulse decision.

I make a living with tools, I'm not an occasional user, I use them every day. I know tools.

The Finish Nailer: This thing is really hard to load and if you want to unload it to change nail sizes, it's even harder. It's unbelievably difficult.
It jams if the nail hits anything but wood. It jammed when I tried to shoot composite flooring, it jammed when I hit a knot, it jammed when it hit another finish nail. If you don't have the safety fully compressed when you pull the trigger, be prepared to fully remove the tool from the workpiece to try, try again. It's a real pain.

The Brad nailer: It's a piece of crap that's frustrating to use in all but bench work. Really. I've used brad nailers for twenty years and this thing isn't even close to any other brand I've ever used including the junk from Harbor Freight. This brad nailer isn't good enough to be sold by Harbor Freight.

The Compressor: The compressor actually has two pros: it's light and it's quiet. The cons are it moves less air than any other compressor I've ever used. I have a 12 volt tire compressor that came in one of those cheesey emergency kits for your car that moves more air than this thing. I guess it's easy to make a quiet, light compressor that doesn't do anything. It's more challenging to make them light and quiet and end up with a useful tool.

The hose is absolutely useless. It's only slightly more flexible than black iron pipe. If it's below 60 degrees, it literally cannot be unrolled.

I've fought this compilation of junk for a month now and tomorrow I'm going to go buy the Hitachi kit. I'm giving the DeWalt kit to my son (who won't run a box of nails in his lifetime). I don't want to give it to any of my employees because it'll slow them down too much. I could give these lemon yellow tools to my competitor's employees, but that would be a dirty trick.

I gave this kit one star (instead of Zero) only because the compressor is light and quiet. The nailers are 1/2 star each- the hose is negative one star.
